The Community is an evolving, immersive sculptural installation composed of woven nests made from discarded instrument strings collected from musicians around the world. Integrating kinetic movement and a 22-channel soundscape, the work evokes a living natural environment while reflecting on communal experience and the intimacy, fragility, and resilience shared by musicians and nature.
Each nest is handwoven, forming a tactile connection to the literal and metaphorical DNA of those who once played these strings. The grit and grime of musical practice is embedded in the material, echoed in the labor of weaving. These parallel processes coalesce into a broader act of communal storytelling. The recurring nest form reflects a universal impulse to construct, protect, and create spaces of belonging.
Suspended in organic clusters, the nests are mechanically activated at irregular intervals, producing a gentle, organic choreography that resists stasis. An immersive soundscape composed by Audrey Wright, using recordings of her own violin manipulated to imitate bird calls and other environmental textures, is mapped to individual nests and moves fluidly through the space, blurring the boundary between musical instrument and natural ecosystem.
Together, these elements form a living system that breathes, flickers, and resonates. The Community invites viewers to encounter the transformed strings not only as reclaimed materials, but as carriers of memory, sound, and connection.
Contributors
The instrument strings used in The Community were generously donated by members of the global string musician community, ranging from young students to professional performers, orchestral musicians, teachers, chamber artists, freelancers, soloists, string shops, and luthiers.
Each used string carries its own history of practice, performance, discipline, and expression. Gathered together, these contributions become a collective material portrait of a community connected through sound.
I am sincerely grateful to everyone who has contributed and continues to contribute to this work, including the individuals and organizations listed below.
