The Community is an evolving sculptural installation by Geoff Robertson. Composed of woven nests made from used, broken, and discarded instrument strings collected from musicians around the world, the piece evokes the intimacy, fragility, and resilience inherent in musical practice. Inspired by the artist’s wife and collaborator, violinist Audrey Wright, it is both an homage to the world of classical musicians and a meditation on the invisible threads that connect communities of individuals. Each nest is handwoven by the artist, forming a subtle connection to the literal and metaphorical DNA of every musician who has played these strings. The grit and grime of musical practice is mirrored in the weaving of the nests, making both processes intensely personal and evocative of communal storytelling. The form of the bird’s nest is a recurring motif for the artist, and symbolizes the universal drive to construct a dedicated space for oneself. The work invites viewers to see the transformed strings not only as reclaimed materials but as carriers of memory, sound, and human connection.
